How EPF contributions are calculated

EPF is the Employees Provident Fund, known in Malay as KWSP. Every month a share of your wages and a larger share from your employer go into your account, following the Third Schedule of the EPF Act 1991.

Employee and employer rates

Employees under 60 contribute 11% of their wages. Private-sector employers add 13% for wages up to RM 5,000.00 and 12% above it. This calculator applies 12% for government employers.

Wage bands, not exact salary

Contributions are worked out on the upper limit of your wage band and rounded up to the next ringgit — which is why the deduction on your payslip is usually a few sen to a ringgit more than the plain percentage of your salary.

Age 60 and above

Malaysian citizens aged 60 and over contribute 0%, while the employer pays 4%. Your take-home pay rises, but so does the importance of what you saved before 60.

EPF lowers your tax

Your own EPF contributions qualify for up to RM4,000 of tax relief a year, applied automatically in your monthly tax deduction. See the effect with the PCB calculator, or your full take-home pay with the salary calculator.

Worked example: RM 3,250.00 salary at age 25

A private-sector employee earning RM 3,250.00 a month, retiring at 60.

  1. 1. Find the wage band

RM 3,250.00 falls in the band that ends at RM 3,260.00. The rates are applied to that figure.

  2. 2. Apply the rates and round up

    • Employee: 11% × RM 3,260.00 = RM 358.60 → RM 359.00
    • Employer: 13% × RM 3,260.00 = RM 423.80 → RM 424.00
    • Total into your account each month: RM 783.00
  3. 3. Project 35 years to retirement

RM 783.00 a month for 35 years is RM 328,860.00 in contributions. At an assumed 5.5% dividend, compounding adds RM 666,273.05, for a balance of RM 995,133.05 at 60.

EPF calculator FAQ

Why isn't my EPF deduction exactly 11% of my salary?

Because EPF is not charged on your exact salary. The Third Schedule of the EPF Act groups wages into bands, applies the rate to the upper limit of your band, and rounds the result up to the next ringgit. On a salary of RM 3,250.00, the band limit is RM 3,260.00, so the employee share is RM 359.00 rather than RM 357.50. The difference is small, but it is why simple percentage calculators rarely match a payslip to the sen.

Is my employer's EPF contribution deducted from my salary?

No. Only the employee share — 11% for most employees — is deducted from your pay. The employer share of 13% (wages up to RM 5,000.00) or 12% (above it) is paid on top of your salary, straight into your EPF account. Both appear on your payslip, but only one reduces your take-home pay.

How much EPF do employees aged 60 and above contribute?

From age 60, Malaysian citizens move to Part E of the Third Schedule: the employee contribution drops to 0% and the employer pays 4%. Set your age to 60 or above in the calculator to see the reduced figures.

How does the EPF savings projection work?

It assumes your total monthly contribution stays the same every month and earns a dividend of 5.5% a year, compounded monthly. It does not include pay rises, withdrawals or your existing balance, and KWSP declares the actual dividend each year — so treat the result as an illustration of how compounding builds your savings, not a forecast.

Can I contribute more than 11% to EPF?

Yes. You can ask your employer in writing to deduct a higher employee rate than the statutory one, or make voluntary contributions directly to your EPF account. Enter a fixed monthly top-up in the voluntary contribution field above to see how it changes your projection.

When must employers pay EPF contributions?

Contributions for a month's wages must reach KWSP by the 15th of the following month — for example, contributions on January wages are due by 15 February. Late payment attracts a late payment charge on the employer, so if a contribution is missing from your statement, raise it with your employer first.
